Scuba diving is a thrilling activity that allows individuals to explore the astonishing beauty of the underwater world. SCUBA stands for short for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.
Using specialized equipment, divers can descend beneath the surface & encounter a whole new realm teeming with vibrant marine life, colorful coral reefs, & mesmerizing underwater landscapes.
Scuba diving has become popular due to the sheer adventure & unique experiences it offers, providing a glimpse into a world that is often unseen & unexplored.
Yes, when done properly, scuba diving is one of the safest & most exciting ways to explore the underwater world. It opens doors to a completely new environment filled with vibrant marine life, colorful coral reefs, & unforgettable adventures.
Like any sport, there are risks, but they are very manageable with the right training, reliable equipment, & a focus on safety. To put it in perspective, statistical studies show that scuba diving carries about the same level of risk as playing recreational sports like cricket or cycling. A single dive is considered several times safer than running a marathon or driving long distances.
And remember, diving is a buddy sport. At UNA, you never dive alone - our team is always present to ensure your safety!
So, is scuba diving safe? Absolutely yes, if you follow your training, respect your limits, & dive responsibly.
At UNA, safety is the cornerstone of every adventure we plan - so you can focus on what really matters: enjoying a life-changing experience beneath the waves. As a PADI 5 Star Dive Centre, we strictly follow international safety protocols & teach our courses following ISO standards. All our equipment is regularly maintained, & every dive is preceded by detailed safety briefings & led by experienced professionals, to further ensure you're informed, aware & prepared at all times.
Most diving incidents are linked to human error rather than equipment failure, which is why education is key. When you learn with UNA's certified instructors, you'll master essential skills that make diving safe & ensure you're calm & confident underwater.
As a diver, it's equally important to dive within your limits, pay attention & adhere to safety briefings, follow your instructor/dive leader's guidance, & never dive alone.
At UNA, the best way to begin your scuba journey is by enrolling in a certification course. As a PADI 5 Star Dive Centre in Pondicherry, we offer globally recognized training that combines world-class standards with our local expertise.
For beginners, the PADI Open Water Diver Course is the perfect first step. Over 3-4 days, you'll learn dive theory, how to use scuba equipment, underwater techniques, & essential safety practices. Once certified, you'll be able to dive confidently to 18 meters with a buddy, anywhere in the world.
If you don't have that much time, we also offer the PADI Scuba Diver Course (a shorter 2-day certification with some depth & supervision limits) or the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program, a fun half-day introduction to the underwater world - ideal if you just want a taste of diving before committing to a full course.
Being comfortable in the water is important for scuba diving, but you don't need to be an advanced swimmer. For certification courses, some basic swimming skills are required.
You need to be able float or tread water for 10 minutes without any swim aids, to sign up for the PADI Scuba Diver Course. To be eligible for the PADI Open Water Diver Course, in addition to the 10-minute float, you'll need to complete either a 200-metre continuous swim without any aids or a 300-metre swim using mask, fins, & snorkel.
If you don't know how to swim but would still like to try scuba diving, you can join the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program. This is a fully instructor-led experience designed for non-swimmers, giving you a safe & exciting introduction to the underwater world.
All PADI certifications from the Scuba Diver Course and upwards are valid for life and are recognized worldwide. Once you're certified, you'll always remain a diver. That said, if you haven't dived in six months or more, it's strongly recommended to do a refresher program before heading out, so you feel confident and safe in the water.
Please note that introductory programs like Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) or Bubblemaker are experiential only. They give you a taste of diving but do not qualify you as a certified diver and therefore do not carry ongoing validity.
Children as young as 8 years old can begin their scuba journey through fun, pool-based programs such as the PADI Bubblemaker & PADI Seal Team. To take part in open water dives, the minimum age is 10 years. At this stage, children can enroll in introductory experiences like Discover Scuba Diving or work towards their PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification. Junior certifications come with depth limits, which are automatically upgraded once the diver turns 15.
For adults, there is no strict upper age limit for scuba diving. What matters most is being in good general health & medically fit to dive. We recommend that everyone review the PADI Medical Questionnaire before enrolling in a program or course, & strongly advise participants over the age of 45 to obtain a doctor's clearance. With proper fitness & medical clearance, many people around the world continue to enjoy diving well into their 60s & 70s.
Scuba diving is generally a low-impact activity, & you don't need to be extremely athletic to participate. However, good overall health & a reasonable level of physical fitness are important for your safety & comfort underwater. If you have any underlying medical conditions, it is essential to consult a doctor before diving. We recommend reviewing the PADI Medical Questionnaire in advance, as it outlines the conditions that may require medical clearance.
Only a qualified physician can determine whether your condition is compatible with scuba diving & provide the necessary written clearance. This applies even if you are a doctor yourself. While there is no strict upper age limit for diving, individuals over 45 years of age are strongly advised to seek a medical check-up & obtain written approval before diving. At UNA, we prioritize safety & encourage all divers to ensure they are medically fit before entering the water.
Scuba diving requires specialized equipment to ensure both safety & comfort underwater. At UNA, essential gear - buoyancy control devices (BCDs), regulators, fins, masks, & 3mm shorty wetsuits - are included in all our programs. For students enrolled in certification courses, we also provide dive computers, compasses, & other necessary accessories wherever required.
Certified divers joining us for fun dives are welcome to use our included gear, & can rent additional equipment such as personal mouthpieces & dive computers, if needed.
As you progress in your diving journey, however, it's always best to invest in your own personal gear. Having equipment that fits you perfectly not only increases comfort & confidence but also helps build good diving habits & familiarity underwater.
Yes, you absolutely can. There are no physical reasons preventing women from diving while on their period - it's purely a matter of personal comfort. If you're feeling well & not experiencing any cramps, headaches, or discomfort, you can dive safely.
Sanitary pads are not suitable for use in the pool or ocean, but tampons & menstrual cups are excellent options. Many women divers & professionals prefer menstrual cups because they are comfortable, reliable, & eco-friendly. Ultimately, the choice comes down to what makes you feel most comfortable & confident in the water.
Yes you can! Underwater, objects appear 33% larger & 25% closer due to refraction of light, so mild vision issues (up to -2.5) usually don't need correction, in our experience. You cannot wear regular glasses under a dive mask, but if you do need correction, you have two options.
You can dive with soft contact lenses, as many certified divers do. Or you can dive with one of our prescription masks - available from -3 to -7 power, upon request. If your prescription falls outside this range, we recommend getting a custom mask for the best experience.
Pondicherry is one of India's hidden gems for scuba diving, offering a vibrant underwater world that surprises many first-time visitors. The man-made, artificial reefs here function as Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs), attracting an abundance of marine life & creating thriving ecosystems right off the coast. Divers can expect encounters with colorful reef fish, turtles, rays, & even whale sharks during the right season.
Beyond the coastline, Pondicherry is also home to spectacular deep-water sites, including the famed Arvind's Wall & its fan coral fields.
Above the water, Pondicherry enchants visitors with its colonial heritage, French architecture, culinary surprises, & golden beaches - making it a destination where culture meets world-class diving.
With an average annual temperature of around 30°C (86°F) - ranging from pleasant winter lows of 21°C (70°F) to summer highs of 36°C (98°F) - Pondicherry's tropical climate makes diving possible year-round, with each season offering its own highlights.
February to October offer good ocean conditions, calm seas, warm water temperatures of 28-30°C, & great visibility. August is especially exciting, as whale sharks are sometimes spotted at our dive sites.
Typically, November to early February often witnesses sporadic cyclonic spells which can make ocean conditions unfavorable for boat travel.
During this period, training & courses are conducted at an inland freshwater quarry, which provides a safe & controlled environment for divers to continue their progress. The quarry is not just a backup location, but a unique training environment where divers can refine their skills in calm, controlled conditions.
