The PADI Open Water Diver Course comprises 3 main components :
Knowledge development to learn the theoretical basics of diving with emphasis on safety procedures. Once a course is booked, We assign the PADI Open Water Diver Course e-learning materials at the earliest to help you complete the theory sections at your pace & convenience, prior to arrival at the dive centre. This is highly recommended to allow more time for in-water training.
Confined water sessions in small batches, in the controlled setting of a swimming pool to learn essential skills including use & assembly of equipment, underwater communication, etc.
Open water dives to apply & refine the skills you've learnt in the pool, while immersing yourself in the underwater world
At UNA, we typically conduct Open Water Diver Courses according to the following schedule
Day 1 (7AM - 5PM): Swim & float tests, theory review, pool training sessions
Day 3 & 4 (7AM - 3PM): Open water dives under the direct supervision of your instructor to explore beneath the waves, perform a few of the skills you've learnt in the pool & get certified!

The minimum age to sign up for the PADI Open Water Diver Course in Pondicherry is 10 years. There is no upper age limit, as long as you are in general good health.
Children, till the age of 14, earn a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certificate & must always dive with a PADI professional or an adult certified diver. The certification upgrades automatically once they turn 15.
While scuba diving does require some level of physical fitness, it is a relatively low-impact activity. You don't need to be extremely fit, but should be in general good health.
However, it is recommended that individuals with underlying health issues & those over the age of 45 years consult a medical professional before going diving. We recommend reviewing the PADI Medical Questionnaire in advance so you know what to expect.
The PADI Open Water Diver Course certifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 18m anywhere in the world, with a buddy.
However, 10- & 11-year-olds can only dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet & must always dive with a PADI professional, parent or guardian. If you wish to be trained to dive deeper, check out the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course.
Most students finish the Open Water Diver Course in about 3 days, provided the eLearning portion (approximately 5-6 hours) is completed beforehand. At UNA, we recognise everyone learns differently, which is why we recommend leaving a little buffer in your travel plans. This gives you time to build confidence & master key skills at a comfortable pace, without feeling rushed. Your comfort & safety are always our top priorities.
If you're unable to complete everything in one go, that's perfectly fine. PADI gives you up to 12 months from the time you start to finish all parts of your course at UNA. You can also take advantage of the PADI Referral system. With an outbound referral, you can begin your training with us & finish it at another PADI dive centre anywhere in the world within a year. With an inbound referral, we can arrange for your pool training sessions to be conducted at your preferred location through our partner network, & then facilitate your open water dives in Pondicherry. The course cost may vary in such cases, so please check with us in advance.
In the rare case that you need extra training days for non-medical reasons, we're happy to provide them at INR 5,500 per day.
We understand that not everyone can dedicate several consecutive days, & we're happy to customise a schedule that works for you. If you'd like to complete the PADI Open Water Diver course but can't manage 3-4 full days in a row, we can spread out your training over a more flexible timeline - keeping in mind that you'll have up to a year to finish your course. If you're short on time but still want to earn a certification, you might consider the PADI Scuba Diver Course, which can be completed in just 2 days & qualifies you to dive under the supervision of a professional to a depth of 12m. For those seeking an even shorter, first-time experience, the PADI Discover Scuba Diving Program is a one-day, fully guided introduction to the underwater world - no prior training or swimming skills required.
Pondicherry's tropical climate allows for diving almost year-round, with warm waters and good visibility between February and October. August is even known for occasional whale shark sightings! From November to early February, however, cyclonic spells can sometimes make ocean conditions unsuitable for boat travel.
Confined water sessions (in the pool) continue as planned regardless of weather, and for open water dives we use a freshwater inland quarry. This isn't just a backup site - it's a safe, controlled environment that gives divers the opportunity to build confidence and refine their skills before heading into the ocean.
On the rare occasion that both boat dives and quarry dives are not possible, UNA will issue you a voucher valid for one year to complete the remaining part of your course anytime within that period, so your progress is never lost.
